Field notes from a guy in rural Montana practicing the art of paying attention to the great mystery., imperfectly and sloppily (but with joy!), through zen buddhist practice, drawing, reading, and writing.

Full Moon
Full moon on a crisp, snowy evening. Reading Becoming Animal: An Earthly Cosmology by David Abram. I loved his Spell of the Sensuous. This book explores our own animality and the damage we create when we deny and denigrate animal intelligence. I find myself reading each sentence of Becoming Animal slowly, savoring the earthy details and word play of his prose. He has this admirable ability to write write with the complexity of an academic--the careful balance of nuanced ideas--and the vividness of a great storyteller.

the infinite extent of our relations
"Every man has to learn the points of the compass again as often as he awakes, whether from sleep or any abstraction. Not till we are lost, in other words, not till we have lost the world, do we begin to find ourselves, and realize where we are and the infinite extent of our relations." --HD Thoreau, Walden

Resolution
Happy new year!
My goal for the new year is to remind myself to draw everyday. To eddy out, step out of the stream and spend some time paying attention through the act of sketching.
